Renewable energy communities

Generated here, shared here.

A renewable energy community brings together households, businesses and public bodies that generate and consume energy in the same area, sharing what they produce in excess instead of simply exporting it to the grid.

The framework

Renewable energy communities exist in Italian law through Legislative Decree 199/2021, which transposes Directive (EU) 2018/2001 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources. It sets out who may take part, how shared energy is measured, and how it is valued.

In plant terms, little changes compared with any other photovoltaic installation. What changes a great deal is the sizing: the plant does not serve a single consumer but a set of different consumption profiles, spread across the whole day.

What we do

We handle the technical side, the part that decides whether the configuration stands up: which connection points can take part, how large the plant has to be, and how much energy will genuinely be shared rather than simply exported.

The corporate and administrative side — legal form, statutes, dealings with the energy services authority — stays with whoever sets the community up. We provide the numbers and the technical documentation those decisions rest on.

Configuration

Which connection points can sit in the same configuration given where they attach to the grid, and what difference one more member makes.

Sizing

The size of the shared plant, calculated on members' real consumption profiles rather than on the sum of their contracts.

Metering and allocation

An hour-by-hour estimate of the energy actually shared, and the instruments to measure it once the community is live.

Putting an energy community together?

The first thing to know is how much energy you will really be able to share.
